Puerto Pollensa History: The town of Pollensa (Pollença) itself is located a few miles inland of Puerto Pollensa and has a history going back many centuries.

Named by settlers from Alcudia in the 14th Century, after their former Roman capital, the town has a Roman bridge, the Pont Roma, which is probably not Roman but much later.

The town was established inland to protect it from raiding pirates and Puerto Pollensa was left in a somewhat isolated position to fend for itself.

Puerto Pollensa in the last century has developed into a high-class seaside resort and has not been spoilt by tourism as may be said of some other more well known Majorcan resorts.

Favoured by the British and mostly visited by families and the older generation, Puerto Pollensa is a sedate, attractive resort with plenty to see and do. Situated in the beautiful Bay of Pollensa, Puerto Pollensa is backed by the picturesque Sierra de Tramuntana mountains which shelter and protect the town, and its old fishing port is dotted with luxury yachts, which lie side by side with traditional Majorcan fishing boats.

Puerto Pollensa boasts a good range of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants, although some of these do close during the quieter winter months. Puerto Pollensa has a couple of excellent beaches and also has some fine water sports facilities.
